The Water Crisis in Numbers

Updated: Apr 9

Access to clean water isn’t just a health issue — it’s a foundation for everything else: education, safety, equality, and dignity. And in Malawi, where water scarcity remains a persistent challenge, the numbers tell a powerful story.

Malawi is a country of strength and community, but many rural areas face extreme barriers when it comes to clean water access:

  • Over 4 million people still lack access to safely managed drinking water (UNICEF, 2023).

  • In some districts, up to 60% of water points are non-functional due to poor maintenance and lack of technical support.

  • Girls and women often walk 2 to 6 kilometers a day to fetch water, frequently from contaminated sources.

  • Diarrhea, linked to unsafe water and sanitation, remains a leading cause of death for children under five (WHO, 2022).

Yet, the solution is not far out of reach. Drilling a properly maintained borehole can provide decades of safe water for hundreds of people. It reduces illness, increases school attendance, empowers women, and supports economic growth.

We’re starting here because water doesn’t just quench thirst — it transforms lives.
